The process of natural biological degradation and purification is what
is called aerobic treatment. The former process can be greatly
accelerated by optimizing the supply of oxygen to micro-organisms. The amount of oxygen provided will vary the degree of oxidation, on the time allowed for the treatment process to react, and on temperature. The comparatively strong oxidizing environment brings more organic compounds breakdown, with water, carbon dioxide, nitrates, sulfates and other simple molecules. Many of the organic compounds related to offensive odors are removed by this method.
